Electrochemical Solutions for Industrial Challenges

Lithium Production

Whether the lithium feedstock comes from hard rock, brine fields, geothermal resources, produced water or battery recycling, both lithium chloride and lithium sulphate brines can be converted to lithium hydroxide using the NORSCAND® Platform. Electrolysis efficiently produces high-purity lithium hydroxide that meets the stringent requirements of the lithium-ion battery industry.

Unlike traditional methods, our process decreases reliance on complex chemical supply chains and waste disposal, reducing operational risks and ensuring a more predictable project timeline. Our “just add electrons” approach elegantly minimizes environmental impacts by eliminating harsh chemicals and harmful waste, leading to lower emissions and reduced water usage.

Lithium Chloride

Lithium Chloride has always been a desirable feedstock for lithium production. Historically, concentrated chemicals were added to produce battery-grade products. With NESI's NORSCAND® platform, the need for concentrated reagents is almost entirely eliminated and operating costs are reduced. Further to this, with the advent of DLE, many newer projects require acid as part of the extraction process. The NORSCAND® platform co-produces acid alongside the LHM product, allowing for a circular process that eliminates upstream reagent costs. Any excess acid can be sold as a valuable product.

Lithium Sulphate

Lithium Sulphate, often seen in hard rock and recycling applications, has a special alignment with the circular process offered by electrolysis. The benefits of electrolysis all remain - valuable co-products, reduced operating expenditures and reduced reliance on complex supply chains. However, perhaps the biggest benefit of NESI's NORSCAND® platform is the complete elimination of sodium sulphate as a byproduct. Offtakes and even disposal options for sodium sulphate have disappeared in recent years, halting and slowing projects. NESI’s process not only eliminates these sodium sulphate issues, but the co-produced sulphuric acid produced is valuable and needed upstream for spodumene or black mass processing.

Waste Recovery - Sodium Sulphate Effluents

Sulphuric acid and caustic soda are common feedstocks to many industrial processes, especially in mining and pCAM production. The most common waste product from the use of these reagents is sodium sulphate. The market for critical minerals and battery materials has grown exponentially, making the environmental loading from increased sodium sulphate unacceptable in many jurisdictions. Offtake agreements have dwindled significantly, as well as disposal options. Valorization of sodium sulphate has become a requirement for many projects, and NESI's NORSCAND® platform allows for an elegant regeneration of sodium sulphate into sulphuric acid and caustic.
